Monday Morning Open Thread

I've got a bit of the writer's block. What's on people's minds in the QC this week?

I get about 10 hits a day from people google searching for Davenport Lofts, seems like they should really have a website.

Automated garbage, new website... can't really think of a whole lot to say about either. Both should be good things, but we'll see. They went all out with the website over at http://pitch-in.org Check it out if you're still deciding which size can to pick.

Also, I feel like I don't put enough time into Illinois-side news. I either need to fix that or change the site to DavenportImages.

Phil might be over weight and conceded, but he would kick your ass in golf....

There was also an article about Phil and a DWI which he admitted two and dealt with.

Maybe Ald. VanFossen could learn a thing or two himself from Phil...

Yeah guys (both of you) but Phil probably does know how to spell conceited.

The people of Illinois only question those from Iowa who can't spell while taking cheap shots at persons they secretly dream about.

I was reading in the pool tournament thread about the smoking issue. I was wondering what everyone's thoughts are on a citywide indoor smoking ban. I really wasn't in favor of this when I first heard it happening, but I think I'm changing my tune a little. I have visited places like LA and Minneapolis and noticed a major difference in how I felt after going out at night to bars and entertainment venues. In addition, I'm seeing studies that towns where smoking has been banned for some time has seen up to 30% reductions in presentation to emergency rooms for heart attacks. Cook County Illinois recently passed a ban to take effect in about a year from now and more and more areas are continuing to follow suit. I think Davenport and Bettendorf should consider this as well. Thoughts?

Conservative Demo here:
I am a non-smoker who does not like the idea of any level of government banning smoking in outdoor public places nor in the confines of private businesses. Instead pass social-engineering-type regulations (for example federal tax the daylights out of ciggs so every State has the same exhorbetantly high price)

That's not to say I like smokers; I think they lack character and self-control. They smell and are pathetic.

But trying to directly regulate morals is not the job of my governments.

It's ok to pass your moral values by taxing items you don't agree with? OK, let's tax the bejesus out of abortions.

A smoking ban isn't a regulation of morals but of public health. Second hand smoke is hard to avoid in enclosed places hence the need for bans. Taxing cigarettes might discourage people from starting to smoke but does nothing to stop or discourage smoking in public spaces.

C/D here again:

9:04 sez "OK, let's tax the bejesus out of abortions. "

Write your legislators.

How is outside smoking going to give anyone second hand smoke? Anyone breathing the air outside is more likely to be breathing in fumes from cars, lawnmowers and outdoor grills than cigarette smoke. Maybe we should ban outdoor barbeques, automobiles and power mowers from cities also.

c/d apparently you didn't note the sarcasm. I think you're idea is damn idiotic.

Heh heh, deep thinkers aren't necessarily quick thinkers. Things bouncing off my forehead's mebbe how I got bald.

The more hair I lose, the more head I get.

Where did we start talking about outdoor smoking?

Just up a few posts, didn't you catch that, QCI!

IZZIS STILL AN OPEN THREAD?
Conservative Demo here:
I see that the neo-cons' puppet is in Iowa stumping for nussle. Some misguided lady wrote a letter of worship in today's QC Times letters section. Poor woman, used and abused and doesn't even know it.
