QCTimes censorship?

The purpose of this blog is to attempt to promote discussion and debate about the Quad Cities, and especially Davenport. This discussion and debate is sometimes messy, but that's ok.

The purpose of the QCTimes and QCTimes.net is to make money. The purpose of their allowing comments to their articles was to maintain readership and continue making money. Therefore is it at all wrong for them to arbitrarily censor their own comments?

Yesterday there were lots of comments on this letter to the editor from Alderman Brooke. Right now there are just 2, including someone asking what happened to all the comments. Did the QCTimes.net staff delete them for a reason? I didn't see how out of hand the discussion was getting, but I don't see why all comments would have to go.

I say let the newspapers make the newspapers and the bloggers make the blogs.

They must like the Tuna because when the Isabel Bloom thing broke there were tons of comments that didn't get removed.

Oh my! Not the QCTimes! I can't imagine them being biased at all. **snicker**

I thought they pre-screened comments. Must've made some mistakes and let some real commentary get through.

It just points out the utility of blogs. Although I note on my own there is a bizarre thread on the Supernintendo blog accusing folks of being racists and implying the f-word. (all with nary a word about the new superintendent) I guess I should erase them (censorship?), but I think it shows those with an irony deficiency.

Real blogs are not for everyone. I don't intend for kids to read SoLo, we sometimes use language not suitable for little ones.

The times has a wider responsibility (and their advertisers) to think of.

The other interesting thing about how the QCTimes is handling the Brooke letter is the paper has KEPT the letter live for several days now. Most letters, and the resulting comments, are removed after a day or two, as new ones take their place.

In a way i don't mind. The more people that see what a class-less A** Charlie Brooke is, the better.

They always leave up the letters with the point of view THEY like for days. Because they are an unbiased news source. R-i-i-i-ght.
