Mid-week Open Thread

If you judge by QCTimes letters to the editor, people aren't pleased about the upcoming inspector disappearance. Just as reading the blogs doesn't give you a good feeling for how the public feels, the Opinion page might not either. I wonder what most people actually think about the budget solution.

What else is going on?

Has anyone seen Alderman Van Fossen drunk lately?

Any truth to the rumor that Harkin is trying to bribe aldermen to vote for the Freight House? The council claimed in Des Moines today that they had $16 million to put toward the riverfront park. How does this work when they have to fire people to make the budget now? I think there's too much pork in office now. Too bad they can't be impeached.

I don't think most people really care one way or the other. But, cutting fire or police...Well that is another matter entirely.

Wow, 3:59 You sure hate that guy... I would mention Rule #3, but that rule actually involves beer, so nevermind.

And Cruiser, as far as the CAT grant proposal, I believe some of the money for Centennial Park is already in the capital budget, and also I'm sure you know that capital money and operating money are two seperate things. What would be the magic number you'd be willing to invest to leverage the supposed "Market District"? None? Even if its $10 million or more in development?

I'd have to go with $0. Until such a time as the necessities can be taken care of without firing staff, and raising taxes.

It sounds like a noble cause, but if all the city planners ideas are good, why won't they release the figures on how the Figge and River Music Experience are doing.

Why not have developers come in and offer them tax relief? I think projects that are self-supported,i.e. little or no government money do better in the long haul.

If someone could prove to me that this project would generate money for the city, and not out of state contractors, I might change my mind.

Wow, 4:27 have you ever talked to the man? He is an IDIOT! I guess I should cut him some slack. After all he was a Davenport cop for many years. We all know that our cops don't have to be...

I have met him, actually, and don't like him much myself. That's why I endorsed Gibbs for 1st ward. However, I don't sit around constantly ragging on him for weeks on end. What's the point?
