Budget problem solved (sort of) and QCTimes borrows an idea from me

No Cuts to police, fire Staff -QCTimes

Apparently it was all a bluff after all.

Help Davenport get Freight House on track -QCTimes

This sounds to me a lot like what I said in this post back on February 17th. They even end the editorial with a similar promise to donate, just as I did. I'm sure its just a coincidence... at least I hope it is.

The final solution was a good one, but I do not believe the loss of firemen and police was a bluff. Their salvation came down to one vote, that of Keith Meyer. Without him, they all would have been flushed. And, as in many situations, nobody was really sure how Keith would vote till the last minute.

Regarding the Freight House, two things would make me happy.

1. Larry Whitty should pay something towards this project, since he is a smart businessman that will be getting out of a ton of debt that he owes the taxpayers.

2. Rather then pinning the success of the Freight House on some rather small time businesses, I would prefer to see a large anchor store secured. It could be a supermarket, or something like that. Then, the rest of the proposed tenants can join in.

3. Here is the kicker, and it is from an informed source....

The developer is willing to do the Freight House with absolutely no financial help from the taxpayers, if they get to run the show. But, it turns out D1 wants to make this a farmer's market, and the builder thinks that will fail so they won't develop that concept without taxpayer assistance. That is why D1 is looking into all of our pockets. In other words, D1 is convinced we need a farmer's market as opposed to something else, and it is not a financially stable idea, so they want the taxpayers to cough up the difference.

It was a bluff, and you are an idiot for believing the blather from the city administrator!

Not a bluff at all. Keith Meyer is the hardest to read vote on the council. Had he gone the other way, we would all have less fire and police today.

Ok, that kind of comment is pointless. I'll probably never delete them because it makes the other side look good to have people like that against them, but one word (especially obscenity) posts don't add anything to the intelligent discourse.

It may be a one word post, but it says a lot. The city could do a deal with one organization for a store at the Freight House with little or no city money, but D1 doesn't want it. As for the budget, we are losing police department employees, not cops, but if dispatchers get in a bind how will the squads get told of the problems. And the firemen doing inspections is also going to hurt their job performance.
This fix is a band-aid on a broken leg. Meyer has some excellent ideas, so does Hammerlink, the city council should use them. I suppose now they'll have to call in a consultant from Kansas City.
