The pendulum swings back

The results are in, (mostly) and we're back to a Democratic Congress... at least probably. Now all of you politicians who have been either slamming on the party in power, or the opposition party, switch places and begin again. Both parties can resume doing everything they can to screw the other party instead of working together, as is our system.

However, it still beats armed anarchy in the streets as far as methods of exchanging power go.

A few thoughts:

-Looks like Susie Bell will be able to remain a fixture at city hall, instead of heading to Des Moines

-Congrats to former Alderwoman Moritz for her return to politics. Makes you wonder where former Alderman McGivern would be minus the DUI?

-At one point, and I wish I'd taken a screenshot, CNN.com's running totals had a difference of only 10 votes in Virginia with over 1.5 million votes cast. So anyone who says 1 vote doesn't matter, keep that in mind.

-Do these folks really have inside info? Whalen's camp kept saying how Scott County was going to win them the election, and that they'd seen a big R turnout. Were they just wrong or knowingly keeping people's hopes up? If so, what's the point of that?

-My precinct, 33, had terrible turnout as usual. Here are the totals of actual voters vs registered voters over the last few years:
2002: 245/2051 or 11.95%
2003: 177/???? or ?% (at 2000 voters you get 8.85%)
2004: 516/1717 or 30.05% (Go Presidential Elections...)
2005: 167/1751 or 9.54%
2006: 282/1904 or 14.93%

Apparently we in the 33rd are much more interested in State and Federal politics than the local stuff. We also seem to trend heavily Democratic, voting over 2 to 1 for Kerry in '04. The 33rd precinct consists of the area from Gaines to the area near the Wonder Bread bakery, and then zig zags up to 7th and Perry, and then up to the north border, which zig zags between 12th, 13th, and 14th. See the map here. Its basically downtown and its northeastern neighbors. One interesting thing is the increase of 153 potential voters from 2005 to 2006. Some portion of that is probably increased downtown residents.

If central city residents want their concerns heard, they NEED TO VOTE.

Completely off subject, but does anyone know what is going on with the old abandoned building in the Hilltop area on Harrison? It didn't look like a demolition, because if that were the case, they'd just be bulldozing it. It looks like they are carefully removing and stacking the roof trusses. Just curious. I was just glad to see something happening to a long-abandoned building.

Yes - what is happening there

I believe that church to the east bought the building, but I'm not totally sure. I'll attempt to find out.

QCI querries where would x-alderman McGivern be without the DWI. That's simple. He'd still be behind the wheel with a rum and coke, endangering every other motorist and pedestrian in the Quad Cities. Thankfully he was caught before he killed someone.

I don't really know how we did in the 5th ward, but it seemed busy early. I seemed to hear more people saying they were so disgusted with the politcal ads that they weren't voting. I myself concentrate more on local issues like QCI, but I hope this bunch can play well together.

Where has the party of Jack Kennedy gone? He stood up to the Russians and forced them to leave Cuba with their weapons of mass destruction. Bush lets Putin take his weapons of mass destruction out of Iraq and take them thru Syria to hide them. Bush did not want to ruffle Putin's feathers and said nothing.

Now that myh Democratic party controls congress (both houses) will they rebuild the US Army so that we will not have to send our National Guard and Reserves to some hell hole every other year? You can not cut 500,000 men out of the Active Army, Army Reserves and National Guard and call America safe. We have less men than we had at the beginning of World War II.

Polosi and Reed better get cracking on building back our military. The idiots in the Middle-East want our blood. The Parade Magazine had an article that these terrorist showed North America as an Islam territory within less than a 100 years. We have elected a Muslim to Congress from Minnesota and next from Michigan I bet. I hear that the Saudis are going to spend billions of dollars between now and 2010 to go house to house in the US to get converts. Sort of like the boys in black coming with their "Watchtower" maazines to gain converts.

We had better wake up. Jack Kennedy would never have allowed this to happen. His Brother Ted has alway been drunk and would not know where to swing to hit his behind. I remember him from th 1960 Presidental Convention that Iowa had in Des Moines. He was so drunk that I do not know if he was sure that he was in Iowa. I remember Marie Healey the Scott County Democratic Co-Chairwoman making a comment about his drunken state. She was a great supporter of Jack Kennedy.
