Armistice Day Open Thread

Thanks to my Dad, my Grandpa, and all the other Veterans who kept us safe.

From the city's website:
"The [Veterans Day] parade will begin at Third and Pershing Streets (former Blackhawk Hotel parking lot) and go south on Iowa to Second Street, west on Second Street to Main Street, north on Main Street to Third Street returning to the staging area."
Now lets try and keep conversation in this thread civil in honor of the day. Hey... I can hope.

Does anyone know why they shortened the parade route. Last year it didn't turn around until Ripley Street. Maybe they figure they'll be a smaller turnout on a weekend. I'm hoping for a good turnout.

Conservative Demo here:

I assume the start at the east end of downtown is due to all the courthouse construction.

Hand salute to every Vet reading here.

We'll be down there today.

I'm proud to say that Leo Kilfoy, past Grand Marshall of the St. Partick's Society Grand Parade and distinguished veteran-was instrumental in organizing the parade this year. The St. Pat's Society will be there to support our veterans and Leo!

Two things for Alderman Meyer: 1) At the committee meetings, Alan Guard responded to you that he would ASK the new ballteam if they would be interested in adding a Surety bond clause to the agreement. If they want to use OUR baseball stadium, we shouldn't have to ask them, but we should tell them, that to play ball in Davenport that they are required to pay for a bond. Baseball teams here have had a bad track record in paying. 2) Before we spend a bundle installing a crosswalk light to get to the skatepark, maybe we should give it some time and see if it's a success. Remember that moline closed theirs, and Clinton's is still open, but nobody uses it. It wasn't too long ago that Gary Stats gave the cost of new signals at a different location, and the cost was amazingly high. Possibly something else could be done like more signage on the curb, or one of those roll out signs like they have at school crosswalks.

The contract with the RME should have been protected with a surety bond also, as it appears that taxpayers will take another bite in this public/private partnership. We also weren't protected very well on the poor designing of the skybridge mechanical system. Dee really glossed that over at the committee meeting on Thursday. Dee made it sound like we should feel good about only having to pay part of it. If it was designed right in the first place, the state money and riverboat money would have covered it. Now we are forced to pay out of another fund to cover this error.

another reason why Ald. Meyer should have his own blog

Keith, 1510 W. Kimberly has 4 bags of trash out at the curb that weren't picked up last Wednesday, as they didn't have the garbage stickers on them. The trash men did not tag the bags with a violation, and so nobody did anything about it Thursday.

Thanks Keith, the bags were tagged sometime today by the city. Thanks for getting a quick response.

11:48 A.M. needs to quit blogging, and going back to munching on animal crackers and drinking grape kool-Aid. Some kids have no good home training.
