Downtown living article

Here's an article in today's QCTimes about urban living.

If anyone knows someone interested in living down here, feel free to send them my way. Alexander Company has recently started a referral program. Since I've been preaching about the Lofts for 2 years now, I might as well get some credit off my rent for it.

Edit at 1:39PM: At Pioneer98's suggestion, here's another article from today's Times about a smaller scale renovation near the Centennial Bridge.

It appears that the gangbanger graffitti is off the building. Did they sandblast it off, or is it just the angle of the photo, and it's still there?

I found the articles about the work Jesse Hammes is doing equally encouraging. It's nowhere near the same scale as the Davenport Lofts, but it is in a much more challenging area, and done without tax credits (other than the fact the building was already in a TIF district). Here's the one about the building on 3rd St.:

Nice catch 7:22, I hadn't even noticed that. It looks like there might still be a little bit on the side facing 4th street, but they must have sandblasted it off of the west-facing wall or something.

Pioneer, I was also impressed by the other article, and I'll add that link to my post. It really shows that downtown is starting to turn around. Anyone that doesn't think that's a good thing must not see downtown as being the heart of a city.

I live SOLO and am very impressed with the Hammes project because it is without free money and it is for profit and for not intentionally low income people. I think these young people are courageuos and need to be supported by the police when they call the report the crack and prositution. That area is FUNKY. Be careful kids and lock you doors. I am worried about you.

Downtown won't be viable -at least for me- to live in until a place to buy a gallon of milk at 10 at night is in walking distance from the building I live in. That's what I miss about living in urban centers (Chicago and Brooklyn)
Where's the Walgreens or CVS downtown? (yes I am talking to you D1)

I agree 100%.

I don't know that I'd do all my grocery shopping at a downtown grocery, but somewhere to buy things like milk within reasonable walking distance would be great.

What is D1's involvement with Horizon Homes? Does anyone know?

They own it-as did many Chambers of Commerce in the 70's when Sec. 8 housing really took off. Many times they were also elderly housing, then housing for disabled persons.

DavOne made money at poor people's expense and did not put any money back into the units.

Where did you folks read that they own it? I'm not saying I don't believe you, because a quick google search did find one page that mentions 130 W 3rd as an address relating to Horizon Homes, but is there somewhere that explains it better?

Don't blame D1 for the lack of Walgreens or CVS Downtown. These retailers are looking for a certain demographic that does not currently exist in any of the QC Downtowns. RI asked one of these retailers to consider a Downtown location, but after doing a demographic study, the retailer wasn't interested. I know of at least one Downtown business in RI that tried stocking a few grocery items. The business was not there. Most Quad Citians still get in their cars and drive to Hy-Vee for a week's worth of groceries, and no retailer is going to locate downtown and stay open until 10:00 so someone can occasionally stop in a buy a gallon of milk.

Thank you for the nice comments about our downtown loft projects, really hope to find more buildings to renovate in the coming years. As we see the the Dt population increase with moderate wage earners, businesses are sure to move in and satisfy the demands. Hats off to the pioneers that are daring to live Dt these days . They are the ones we can thank when Dt davenport becomes the thriving beautiful river front community it is destined to be! Please contact us with tips on properties coming available. Thanks again, Jesse Hammes, Re/Development Services
