I didn't get the Skybridge view, which was probably one of the better views, but I looked at the dam lighting demonstration from both Davenport and Rock Island. There were 3 trial sections, and the one nearest to Davenport was clearly the worst in my opinion. It used much dimmer, yellow-er lights, and just looked bad. Either of the other two looked pretty good.
Despite all the outrage about these over on the QCTimes.comments on the article about it, I don't think this is much of a big deal. Considering the decorative lighting on this building, and the CityView apartments, both of which are pretty bright, I'd say that these lights must not cost a fortune. Split $100,000 among 2 cities, D1, some RI groups, and private donors and you've got petty cash.

Saw Clayton Lloyd, Tom Saul, Ian Frink and Shawn Hamerlinck checking out the lighting choices on the dam. I heard Barney wasn't there because all of his Hawaiian shirts were in the wash.
The center lights were too bright. We liked the lights on the Davenport side because they tended to match the yellowish lights of the nearby buildings and parking lots.
Shouldn't the dam have already had a better lighting system for the sake of navigation?
Hey, I think me and my friend Jason were standing right beside you when you took this pic...
He must be another graduate of Barny's english class. :)
I don't know if blending in is what we want for the dam, but I agree that the yellowish, dim lights did blend in with the existing parking lots more...
I think having the rollers brightly lit with white light would make the dam look like a feature instead of an obstacle at night.
And Shane, just think, you could have knocked me into the river while I was taking the picture and struck a blow for the mainstream media against bloggers.
I looked at the dam from the Skybridge (Bridge to our Riverfront). I liked the one near the lock. The middle one was too bright and the lights glared back at you. The one near Davenport was hard to see. Not bright enough. I was also impressed with the number of people in the Skybridge, didn't see any "bums" (or pee stains either) like you see reported on these blogs. Saw a lot of young people!!
Tom does a good job and I happened to be around when he was asking folks their opinion of the dam lights. There must have been at least ten different people that he asked an opinion of and I heard all give negative replies. A couple folks asked him when it was going to start because they didn't think what they were seeing was the sample program. Like Tom reported, all considered the event "underwhelming". Most expected some kind of colored lighting or something more spectacular than a display of security lighting.
Once you see at least one one of the selections used all the way across the dam there may be a significant impression.
Whatever happened to those floating bonfires that were supposed to be used on the river during summer events?
Hey give me a half dozen flood lights and a drill with a concrete bit. Lets not spend thousands on this candy bar folks.
Now imagine the Iowa side of the dam with all the lights from the new Casino-parking deck-hotel. I think they'll pale in comparison.
