Bettendorf event center over budget, temporarily delayed -QCTimes
So Bettendorf is holding off on their IOC-sponsored competition for the RiverCenter. According to the article, its a combination of being over budget and worrying about IOC's sudden desire to reexamine what they're doing around here.
I'm not sure where the worries are in Bettendorf, because I can't see them abandoning all they've done down there. I mean, the 2nd hotel tower isn't even open yet. If only they had something besides their ugly boat/building-on-a-barge tying them to downtown Davenport.
As I've said many times, I'm no lawyer, but I wonder what happens if Davenport takes a hard line and holds them to their agreement. If IOC backs out of the riverfront project, will they owe us compensation? Of course, I don't know if any lawyers read this, but I'm sure we'll see anonymous people claiming to be lawyers telling us how it is. I wish that the Isle understood that not every casino needs to be a mirror image of Riverside to compete. I'd rather visit a downtown casino than a sprawling resort casino any day. I doubt I'm the only one.

I understand IOC may want to change a few things around (like marketing)to meet the needs of a new market now that Riverside is open. Really, Tama is the one that should really be worried. But I am not worried, our casinos's numbers will bounce back once Riverside looses that "new casino" smell.
I can't see either boat staying in their current locations if they don't make money. If they want to be competitive with these land base casinos and their amenities,they almost have to move.
I don't think they necessarily have to move to make money, they just have to find what people want and give it to them. Mirroring other businesses to succeed will always keep you one step behind. They need to come up with their own niche and stick to it. I still like my idea of giving them credit island and making an amusement park style destination out of the area.
I am no lawyer but I would enjoy playing one on TV.
I seem to recall many Mr. Malin among many other city leaders touting how the IOC is locked-in for fifty plus years to guaranteed payments to the city. Of course each IOC operation is probably an individual entity that can declare bankruptcy at any time, but that is just a detail.
Riverside tapped the revenue rich Cedar Rapids/Iowa City corridor as a base, I do not think it is about new casino smell.
I just say you better build the new I-74 bridge quick with plenty of exits to State Street.
They're making money now.
What they want to be doing is making MORE money.
I really think the norovirus thing hurt their revenue for those two months than the opening of Riverside. We need more data than 2 months to know the impact of the Riverside operation.
Flooding potential here, hurricanes in the Gulf, these casinos are going to move off the river if at all possible.
Just listen to the quotes from both mayors, they sound as if they are speaking for the IOC.

Isn't Happy Junior locked-in for a number of years at the freight house? Isn't our city falling all over itself to let him out of it?
