The Davenport: 100 Years

I got a chance to walk through The Davenport apartment building downtown today, on its 100th anniversary. She's definitely looking great for her age.The Davenport, as seen in a 1922-postmarked postcard from my personal collection.
The Davenport: Today
Like urban views? Here's one. I wish the people reading about pigs running the streets could see this view of Iowa.

The view from the apartment featured in the QCTimes article, and the former fountain in the lobby. As you can see, and as the article mentioned, its been converted into a seasonal planter.

This building is often overlooked as part of the downtown housing rebirth, as it was rehabbed a decade and a half before any of the recent stuff. Much like the market-rate units in the newer projects, it has pretty much no vacancies. According to the staff, none of the 70+ units stay available for long at all. This makes sense to me, because if people are willing to spend a grand a month on the Alexander properties, I'm sure there are even more people willing to spend less to live in a beautiful historic building across from the library.

The apartments that were shown as part of the open house were extremely well-decorated, and seemed in great shape as well. I hope a lot of you folks got an opportunity to check them out if you're into this kind of thing like I am. Thanks to the staff of The Davenport for showing me around and helping keep residents in downtown Davenport.

It was great of you to take note of this, and give The Davenport someo kudos. We take for granted how well managed it is and that the building has in fact stood the test of time.

QCI
Keep an blog eye, after the first of the year, for a video post on the "restoration" of the Putnam at 215 North Main (D-1)

And QCI
What happened to the post you planned on your designer friend, Darrin, his friend John, and the pocket park in the Village of East Davenport.

Also what happened to the front of the Willie Eckstein building across from the Ground Transportation Center.

Hint " "rightly or wrongly"

Where was your designer friend and tara.

Yah, I know. the tire doesn't always go flat as soon as the nail goes in. but eventually.......

Is it ever possible for you to say exactly what you mean? Why beat around the bush, just come out with it, if you have anything meaningfull for us to consider.

Nobody pays any attention to Meyer's innuendo crap.

Keith, I didn't end up doing my post about the pocket park because it made you look so bad that I was going to be attacked for picking on you. It was right in the midst of some of your other problems, so I just scrapped it to avoid the giant argument that would have ensued. Suffice it to say that you greatly misinterpreted what happened between Darrin, Freuh, and Mr. Wisor and as usual, made a mountain out of a molehill.

I disagree QCI - Mr. Wisor is an ASS. With all capital letters. In fact this town is full of them. Asses that is. The fact is that there is a club and if you don't believe, you are out of that club.

QCI
That lawsuit filed by the good doctors says a mountain wasn't made out of your mole hill. Another one of the many lawsuits the City of Davenport stands to lose.

And anonymuous. Don't be too hard on Images. He is not greedy enough, crooked enough, powerful enough, or smart enough( sorry QCI just being honest), to be a member of the club. Somebody has to carry water though. Perfect.

The fact of the matter is that we waste a great deal of money and talent in this city. We are ignoring the important things like public safety and stuff like that. Look at how the city is deteriorating around us. NOLO is looking like SOLO and SOLO is getting a lot of attention finally. And forget about the West end - we have simply forgotten the West end. It may as well not exist.

Keith,
That lawsuit is over him building steps on the sidewalk in front of her property, which he DIDN'T DO. Go look for yourself. Her winning that is as likely as me being able to understand your gibberish postings on your blog. If you want to start insulting me, I've got quite a few things I could say.

After reading QCI's response to Meyer I took the time to look at Meyer's blog. QCI's description of the postings are accurate.

Gibberish might be a little too polite.

QCI
He removed the sidewalk in front of the iron fence, placed circular foundation structure for the new steps, and then stopped, only when the lawsuit was filed.

Say all you want QCI. I am interested in knowing just how much you have been brainwashed.

Everyone that disagrees with you is not part of a vast conspiracy to lie and trick people.

Keith:

Here is a reality check for you. Where is there an error in any of the following? Your silence will acknowledge that you have misstated the facts and events.

The owners of the pocket park do not own the sidewalk. The porch added to the front of the pizzeria is supported by posthole footing (round concrete structures). Those footing as well as the porch require a city building permit. The footings are within the property line of the pizzeria building and the construction conforms to the building code. If the sidewalk on public property was disturbed to allow for construction, that is allowed so long as the concrete is repaired to city specifications. Most likely, a drawing for the porch would have been submitted to the City Building Department for approval before a permit was issued. No work would have proceeded before a permit was issued.

Neither the porch structure or the stairs infringe on private property, or what is currently city property. The permitting process would have exposed any potential violations of the building code and would not have allowed a building permit if there were any violations.

So where is there a basis for a lawsuit? A lawsuit for what? Anybody can sue anybody for anything. That doesn't mean the suit has merit. Keith, you of all people know that.

There was a lawsuit that was settled out of court you stupid dope. Not everything is a conspiracy, but is a reality on occasion. QCi - you are an idiot.

Anonymous said...

Settled out of court as in; without merit, dropped.

And, why does anybody care? This whole thing is only an issue with Meyer, and it isn't remotely clear what his issue is. No reason to continue discussing this, it only feeds Meyer's obsessions.

He wrongly feels that the "evil" city staff is trying to take private property for development, even while he himself did a similar thing by suggesting eServ locate on the Block property north of 4th Street. How brainstorming about putting dining on one property is different than brainstorming about putting an office building on another property I don't know.

But I'm sure there's some difference

FORMER Alderman Meyer you need to worry about your own ward. As a business owner in the Village, and no, not either one of this discussion, we need NONE of you. Your ward ends at COLLEGE! Until January, you need to keep YOUR ridiculous utterances to things that pertain to your ward. Keith, if you look REAL hard in your part of town, you may be able to find just a "couple" things that need attention.

I'm so glad Boom showed Mr. Meyer to the door. The door mat is waiting.
Buh-Bye.
