Don't Forget! Promise Meeting

Davenport Promise Meeting
7:00PM
Thursday, October 4th
in t
he Genesis East Heart Institute auditorium

Whether you're for it, against it, or for or against various ways of funding this potential program, you should try to attend one of these meetings. People around here have a history of not going to the meetings where things are decided (RiverVision comes to mind) and then getting all upset later when the results start coming out. If you don't go to any meetings, you lose your right to complain later.

People can be against using public money for the Promise, but no one can really be against what they are hoping to accomplish. It would be awesome if we could figure out how to do it 100% with private donations, but it's going to take a ton of work. This is why any and all help is welcome.

Forgive my ignorance, but what program are you talking about?

What is "Promise"?

It is Davenport's version of the Kalamazoo Promise, which was introduced in Kalamazoo, of all places. It basically says that if you go through your 12 years of public school in our district, your college tuition will be paid for. This wouldn't include room and board, etc. The idea is to bring in more students to our public schools, more residents to our tax base, and hopefully more educated citizens to our city. Since school districts receive money based on number of students, increasing the number of kids in our school district makes for more funds for education.

Google search for the Kalamazoo Promise and you'll find a lot of info on that, and if you search QCTimes.com for info on the Davenport Promise you'll find a number of articles from the last few months.

Where is it written that if you don't go to this meetinig you lose your right to complain later on?

Keith-we all know that whatever the opportunity to provide input, you will always be there, after the fact,to throw your uninformed mud balls. It's nice to know that you will always be predictable in this respect. Hang onto that strategy as it is working so well for you.

I don't think it is written anywhere that you can't complain even if you are uninformed. However, I can't imagine why anyone would take a person seriously if they fail to educate themselves completely on a subject they plan on bashing. Keith you are way wrong about the Promise. I will make you a "promise", I won't vote for you.

It's just Keith asking the "tough" questions again.
As long as he keeps ASKING these tough questions until November 6th, that would be fine.

What is WRONG with you Mr. Alderman?

How do any of you Bozo's know that was actually Keith posting?

These Blogs are bullshit!

I think you may be correct if that "is" the question.

If someone doesn't go to meetings where things are decided, its their own fault if things aren't decided their way. If they do attend, and it still doesn't go their way, they did their best, and in my opinion are free to complain later. That would include "I told you so's." If you weren't at any of the meetings, you apparently didn't care enough to try and affect the decision.

OUR taxes should NOT be raised for this program. Who ever is in charge of this NEEDS to find funding. I sure hope yerington gets in so this will not take our taxes and raise them higher than they already are.
Save our taxes vote yerington

Where do you get your information? Wouldn't you really like to find out what the true information is instead of jumping to assumptions like Yearington did? Is a person really ready to be Mayor if they make a decision without finding out any of the facts? Meyer and Yearington are against the plan without ever attending one meeting of the Davenport Promise. That in itself says alot.

Please understand that Promise is an allowance for tuition and NOT a full ride! However, it is probably the only way my kids are going to be able to attend a halfway civil college.

Yerington is not against the Davenport Promise he is against using OUR tax money to fund it.

Try reading his site and you will see just that

11:14...THANK YOU!!

bam....so after I paid for YOUR kids to go to 12 years of school, I will now be forced to pay for another 4 years?? Sounds fair to me! I would like a new house, why don't I dip into your pocket (taxes) to pay for it???

1:06 You didn't pay for my children to go ANYWHERE.

I believe the parents should be paying NOT tax payers for college.

What says after we use our tax money to put theese people though school they get adegree and then MOVE to IL

Let vote in someone who will NOT let taxes get raised for something like this. If this is such a good program then find funding privately it should be no problem if its such a great program

What is the difference between tax money for college (which is already happening anyway) and tax money for elementary through high school?

I don't get some of you people, you have made a decision without any information. Taxes already go for education. What better way to make a community that is a great place to live but to educate our children. When are you againsters going to stop and try to be part of the solution instead of part of the problem?
As someone who has attended the Promise meetings, I can tell you this is a wonderful opportunity for our city and we need to be up to the challenge of finding a way to fund it. If one of the other cities decides to do this instead of Davenport, we will just be a losing city, with little hope of growth.
