Buses, kids, and old buildings

I went to the Swing game yesterday, and had the luck/misfortune of it being "High School Day." Apparently this means kids of all ages from about a 30-mile radius take a day off of school and get bused to JOD for some baseball. It was neat to see thousands of kids packing the stadium, at least until it came time to stand in line for a hot dog. Despite having a big crowd, only 2 of the concession stands were open, so there was quite a wait to get food. However, it was great to see the home team really blow out the visitors for once, including a 10-run 5th inning. The attendance was nearly 4000, counting all the kids.

Also, if you're downtown this week, stop by the Design Center. In honor of Historic Preservation Week, they will be hosting an exhibit called "Davenport Lost." It is filled with side-by-side images of historic buildings around Davenport that have been lost over the passing years, and what those locations look like today. Pretty interesting stuff, if you're into history at all. The Design Center is located on the northeast corner of 2nd and Brady.

Hey, great blog here! Would you be interested in exchanging links? I have a QC photoblog, as well (although mine is dedicated to the more "natural" side, you could say). I'll be adding you to my left sidebar. Thanks!

Sure, I stuck a link up to your site.

You've got a lot of cool shots, and they certainly provide contrast to my more urban, city-based pictures.

LOL - I drove by that game on the Centennial bridge and thought how glad I was that I didn't go to that game!

Is it just me or do the hot dogs there really suck? They taste like water, I think Oscar Mayer has a better product. Good baseball == good hotdogs.

As non-traditional as it is, I almost always get the chicken strips and fries basket at JOD. However, the "businessman special" consists of a box seat, hot dog and a small pop for $11, so that's what I got this time. I actually thought the hot dog was pretty good, and wondered why rolling slowly on metal rollers makes them taste better than ones I make at home. It might be possible that it was more "fresh" (as fresh as a hot dog can be) than other games because of the mad rush at the concession stands. Or maybe, as I've been told by several folks, I am not a good judge of quality food.

I don't know if you'll see this, since this post is a few days old....
The kids at the game were elementary and jr. high (high school? don't know) kids who read at least 100 minutes a week for four weeks straight as part of the "Swing into Reading" program. That, along with good behavior, earned them a trip to the ball game that day. I chaperoned my son's school, and it was a great day! Great weather, great game! The kids were VERY excited to be there, and I would bet the players were thrilled to be playing for such a large, enthusiastic crowd. As far as concessions....The kids were all fed a Luncahble for lunch. I think the Swing staff probably didn't anticipate so many kids bringing money from home for extra food/drinks. The lines were long. But Congrats to the kids who got to go!!

Thanks for the information Jen! I remember my school's reading program was with Happy Joe's and we got free personal pizza's after reading so many pages. I had lots of pizzas :)

Good job to the kids who got to go.
