Bad storm

I had planned to do a post this morning, but I don't have power and I don't feel like typing a whole post with my thumbs. I drove around a bit and this storm seems like one of the worst we've had in a while. The damage seems worst east of Brady and also in the southwest end. There are a lot of power lines down and trees and branches on houses and cars. I kept wondering when Davenport is going to catch a break this year! It seems like its been one natural disaster after another.

Northeast Davenport and most of Bettendorf seem untouched, from my early morning driving. Looks like those areas close to the river took the biggest hit...

I can't help but think to myself "Global Warming?"
It has been a rough spring/summer after the winter from hell.

global warming my butt. go hug a tree douchebag.

Whether you think global temperature changes are man-made or not, it's becomming harder and harder to explain the pattern of extreme weather that's continually getting worse.

Tree Huggers, as you put it, are not the only ones thinking this a problem these days.

I remember plenty of extreme weather from before we knew what cfc's or ozone even meant.

Either way you feel about global warming, its in our own interests to not pollute the place that we live.

I got power back around noon I believe, but I'm not completely sure. It looks like the IL side got hit worse than Davenport.

Interesting response there from 1:49PM, not a rebuttal but merely an uncontrollable instantaneous elbow jerk. Has the sound of anger to it, not even the hint of intelligent thought.

Classy, his mother taught him well.

Venture onto the John Deere corridor and the neighborhoods above and you'll know what hell looks like. The Iowa side doesn't even come close. Hello?! State of emergency in Moline and Rock Island County and declared state disaster area. My power did not go out in East Moline but all around me it did. This way worst than that ice storm we had in 2007.

You would think this "derecho" would have caused more damage in the country, but no, it centered right on the bluffs north of John Deere/Blackhawk Rd. from Chippanok Cemetery to TPC at Deere Run in Silvis causing havoc in those two places and everywhere in between. Can you imagine if this happened during the golf tournament?

And you know that part of John Deere that is closed east of I-74? It’s made traffic a mess. There are two main transmission lines that are down, the spot I just said and just west of John Deere World Headquarters. The one east of I-74 had dozens of trucks working on it and will be done and open tomorrow. With Ave. of the Cities closed for construction near I-74, it is challenge just to get to the other side of town.

The news coverage of QC Times and KWQC of the storm damage is poor. They need to venture into the neighborhoods north of the bluff to get a real understanding of how it is. The hardest hit area is in between Kennedy Drive and 41st Street in Moline and south of 34th Ave. Many houses in that heavily wooded area had trees land on houses and power lines entangled into trees. It’s cleaned up their, but there are huge piles of branches in front of every house. At one time, Rock Island had many streets cut off by downed trees, but it has improved slightly. To me, their media coverage is not complete until I see talk about those areas.

I can't believe your talking about global warming. I'm not blaming this on global warming. This event hasn't happened much in the past and it’s never happened here before. I have to congratulate the city of Moline on their job on picking up debris and clearing the streets. They’ve had a lot to deal with in the past 72 hours.

That's exactly why some people blame global warming. Things are happening now that never happened 100 years ago.

I'm not saying that global warming is to blame, but I don't know how it can be ruled out so easily.

Correlation does not equal causation. It really isn't good enough to say "well, we do think the globe is warming and it just so happens that we've had some bad storms." Just becauses things happen at the same time does not mean they are related. They could be, but that's not good enough. And we've had plenty of bad weather in Iowa and Illinois over the years. Technology just allows us to keep better records and record phenomena better than in the past. Of course, none of this rules out global warming, either. It's pretty silly either way to say a storm in Davenport, Iowa, is or is not related to global waring at this point. That said, either way, we should be trying to pollute less and conserve more.

Also, as was previously noted, Illinois seems to have gotten hit much harder than Iowa. Rock Island is still out of power in many areas and it is now Wednesday. Trees were everywhere, etc. I've never seen so many power lines laying in peoples' yards, either. I would expect that would be the first priority - to clean those up.

Conserve more? You like only flushing once for every 3 dumps?

My mother lives in Milan and is without power still. I live in KEy West and am with power until we get hit by another hurricane. I feel for each and everyone of you. In 2005 while all we heard was Katrina, Katrina, Katrna...there was Wilma on Ovtober 24th. The FLorida KEys saw storm surge in excess of 14'. We lost nime cars in our family and one of our homes. Just like you doid not hear about our Wilma, we did not hear about your storm. We were without power for 2 weeks and three years later still in recovery mode. Good Luck and don't count on FEMA or your insurance companies for anything....they are a JOKE!

Day 4 of no power along John Deere Rd corridor - where I work. That 7,000 customers without power in Moline must be in that area and the hills above it.

I drove into Chippinoak Cemetery 2 days ago and what a mess. It is going to take more than a months time of work to get all of those cleared and out of the cemetery. Last I heard in the Dispatch, they counted 112 trees down.

There was a lot of damage in the country, too, especially outside Andalusia and Taylor Ridge. A machine shed was destroyed; another had the roof blown off; lots of shingles off houses; chimneys blown off. 100 year old oaks and huge evergreens broken off or pulled out by the roots. In Andalusia, there are at least two garages flattened by trees.
