Who I think will make it through the primary

I'll throw my hat into the guessing ring, and post my best guesses (and some of them truly are guesses) as to who will make it through the Davenport primary election.

These are who I think WILL make it, not who I think SHOULD make it. I may do a post on that later. No explanations on these yet, and feel free to make your guesses in the comments section. If you want the fame and glory of guessing the closest, you might want to log in or at least use a nickname. Here are my predictions.

Mayor:
Gluba and Yerington

At-Large:
Frink, Olsen, Meeker, and Combs

1st Ward:
Gibbs and Brown

2nd Ward:
Hamerlinck and Gaghagen

3rd Ward:
Boom and Meyer

4th Ward:
Ambrose and Lewis
(If we were playing Bingo, this would be the center square)

5th Ward:
Lynn and Cunningham

6th Ward:
Gilmour and Justin

7th Ward:
Barnhill and Davis

8th Ward:
McDonnell and Matson

Picks that I'm the least sure of:
Gaghagen, Justin, Matson

Howard says she's the "jobs" mayor. Maybe she's trying to get her son another job.

Anonymous said...

yerington is only looking to get elected for retaliation to a city that fired him.

Anonymous said...

Yerington was not fired. He is RETIRED. I have worked under Phil for a few years and he was one of the most honest cops we had. He was very fair. The entire faxgate was a scam from the start. Phil is not looking to retaliate seeing he has no reason for it. Also the cheif who was against him is no longer with us.

Anonymous said...

Now everyone is against poor phil.....why doesn't he go back to managing stores because the city is way too big for him to manage correctly!

Thanks for the insights, QCI.

One note to you, though: true Bingo enthusiasts know it better as the FREE SPACE.

But the more I think about it, the more I prefer being in the "center square". Makes me feel like Wally Cox. Or Paul Lynde. Or Whoopi.

I don't agree with you on all your picks. I think that in the 6th ward Fuller has been working the hardest, and people have associated Gilmore with the 3 little ladies at city hall. I also think that in the 8th Dill will do better than McDonnell. I am hoping that Meyer and Lynn don't make it through the primaries. I also have problems with Olsen. She has always been self serving. She is a real NIMBY

Anonymous said...

I like McDonnell - but not sure about tht race. Gilmore is good and honest - he will be good. Olsen is honest too and how can someone be NIMBY if it is already in their backyard - you dope. I remember holding people accountable and she was right about the JLC agency after all. I am going with her over the Davenport One guys. We need a change.

Anonymous said...

Gillmore is just another againster. We will have more of what we have now if we elect him. As for Olsen; at large needs to represent the whole city, I haven't seen her show any interest in the East part of town.

Anonymous said...

Thanks for your observation on Olsen. I agree, at large needs to represent all neighborhoods; residential, retail, commercial and industrial.

If Olsen presented a broader view it would be easier to take a hard look at her. Maybe expanding into detail and specifics on her QCT Questionnaire would help.

I just got the mail and there is a very fine mailer from Jamie Howard. Here is a quote "I recognize that many in our community our tired of the "antics" and "personal indiscretions". Anyone who has been down at city hall to watch Jamie Howard smirk and talk to other aldermen while someone is talking knows that Jamie is one of the aldermen that the people are tired of. Yes Jamie, we are tired of the "antics" even the ones that come from you. It is time for you to be voted off the island

QCI,
A few thoughts...
1. I think Yerington doesn't make it to the general. Just haven't seen any organization of a campaign. It takes more then yard signs and letters to the editor.
2. Agree with your At-Large picks, but obviously Comb's is 4th.
3. I think the 6th ward could be a surprise, in that Gilmour is 3rd. Justin and Strang have been running a very good, hard campaign. I have heard lots of feedback that both of these guys are knocking on doors. Fuller takes from Gilmour also.
4. 8th ward will be interesting, in that Matson has name. But I have heard little effort in terms of door knocking or organization. Depending upon turn out, remember the name of "Dill".
5. And my "don't be surprised" prediction: Pat Gibbs & Phil Yerington both get edged out by a few votes.
6. Mayor, At-Large and 6th Ward are all hinged on 6th ward turn-out. Strong 6th ward is bad for Yerington,Gilmour and Combs & the other gal who works as a security gaurd at the QC Airport (sorry, forgot her name).

Just my opinion,

George

Anonymous said...

Sorry,
Her name is:
Tina Gillispie-Clawson

I apoligize for the way I summarized her name on the above post.

George

Anonymous said...

Go away George. The best thing that ever happen to Blog land was the day you went away.
Phil is hands down favorite. Even the 6th ward elitist that want to spend West Davenports money can't stop this tnusami!
Gibbs,Handerlink,Meyer,Ambrose,Lynn,Gilmour,Doc,Dill,Olsen,Combs & Yerington.
Thats the team to bring Davenport back to common sense days. And the 6th ward can't stop us.

Anonymous said...

I agree with you except we need to change Lynn to Cunningham. Cunnigham would be much better for the 5th. I have lived in hte 5th for years and Lynn has done NOTHING

QuadCityImages said...

There certainly won't be some againster landslide.

Ask Niky about last election.

Anonymous said...

The sixth ward has a strong slate of people running for Alderman.
However, Justin is head and shoulders above other candidates here in the sixth ward.
Jeff has the sense and abilities to move our city forward!

Anonymous said...

QCI- I think you have it right! I like Justin in the sixth, and Meeker at-large. I can't see Howard making it through the primary.

Anonymous said...

Howard and Gluba both made FOOLS of them selves today at the Mojo.

Anonymous said...

Meeker is scarry.

Anonymous said...

How did the thing at MOJO go today? I had work to do so I could not make it would be interested to know though.

Anonymous said...

You can listen to Mojo on the QCTimes but Yerington was the only one who made any sence.

Anonymous said...

Was Dolan chased out of town because of Jamie or something unseemly he was doing with another manager?

QuadCityImages said...

Why does there have to be a conspiracy behind someone moving to the Rocky Mountains to take a much bigger salary and probably have fewer scandals and drunk harassing Aldermen to deal with?

Anonymous said...

QCI: I believe their should be a comma between drunk, harassing in your previous post...since they were two different people, and to my knowlege Keith does not drink.

Anonymous said...

I want say that the loss of Jeff Dolan from city staff is unfortunate for Davenport, but a fantastic and well deserved opportunity for him. The last several years I have had the opportunity and the pleasure of working closely with Jeff, and respect and appreciate the dedication and character he brought to the city. Although we represented different perspectives, his commitment to open communication and integrity allowed us to work together to assure workable solutions to issues facing the City and Fire Department. While his work was largely "back stage", Davenport is better off form the time Dolan spent here. Good luck Jeff in your new opportunity!

To the 2:48 poster. Your representation of the candidates is pretty scary. It shows the atitude of some of you people who constantly want to divide rather than work together. This isn't the Hatfields and McCoys, this is Davenport. Good people live in all the wards, and I am know that all west-enders aren't as rude as you.

"Gibbs,Handerlink,Meyer,Ambrose,Lynn,Gilmour,Doc,Dill,Olsen,Combs & Yerington"

SCARY, VERY SCARY THOUGHT !!!

Anonymous said...

This will be a fun primary! I wish everyone who is running the best of luck and thank you all for running. Here is who I think will make it through:

1st - Brown and Gibbs
2nd - Hamerlinck and Gaghagen
3rd - Boom and Dyer
5th - Lynn and Skovronski
6th - Justin and Gilmour
7th - Barnhill and Davis
8th - McDonnell and Dill
At Large - Frink, Olsen, Combs and Meeker
Mayor - Gluba and Yerington

These are just my thoughts. I was glad to read everyone elses. Have a great weekend and be sure to come out and vote!

Anonymous said...

Not sure. I think Cunningham is in in the 5th - what are you thinking. I also think Meyer will make it. I think Mattson will also. I agree at large totally. Not sure about mayor. This is way too exciting of an election.

Anonymous said...

What makes you folks think Lynn will make it past the primaries?

Lisa said...

Hi, everyone -

Even though we don't have a primary in the 4th ward, I wanted to let you all know that anyone looking for more in-depth/less sound-bitey information on issues can now view the lengthier candidate surveys on the QCTimes website. Mine can be found at:

Hopefully, the entire link can be viewed in this window. . .

What I think is SAD is Lisa Lewis is havigna party for her Grandmother and has it posted on Dav1. This get together is in memory of her Grandmother and she is using it to collect money for her campaign. this get together has NOTHING to do with the election and it shows how low she is to use the memroy of her Grandmother to to help pull her thru winning an elelvtion. This is just WRONG

Anonymous said...

I think it is even sader that Ambrose voted to elminate the NEO and them supported the neighborhood groups who made good suggestions and then voted to not fund the staff the neighborhood groups recommended. I think it is sader tht Ambrose does whatever Dan Lubell wants. I think it is really really a crier that Ambrose promoted a carryout liqour mart in his ward on marquette street (all kinds of problems) and now he is supporting the moritoreum and pretending to be concerned.

I would rather have a woman who honors a loved one by taking action for the community then this joke kept in office by the stupid people of the 4th ward.

Go Lisa!

Lisa,

Not only are you "hot" but very smart! Great talking to you this afternoon in Goose.

To 8:10AM:

I respect your right to feel as you do, but here's something I hope you'll consider.

My first concept for the October event - in honor of my grandmother - was called "COMM/Unity". The idea was to have an ice cream social/exhibit hall kind of thing with ALL candidates under one roof. No speeches, no debates -- just a chance for all interested voters citywide to meet and greet all the candidates in an informal, family-friendly way.

I had donations lined up for the space, as well as ice cream and pop donated, etc. HOWEVER, when I called Campaign Finance in Des Moines, my concerns were confirmed: none of us as candidates - singly or together - can accept corporate donations of any kind (including donated space, ice cream and pop, etc). And sorry, but much as I'd like to I cannot afford to rent space or buy enough refreshments for what could be such a big crowd. The decision was made to let this idea go for another year when there is more lead time to plan it.

In any case, I had already told many people that I planned to have a party in Grandma's honor on October 17 -- and (whether you know this or not) a great many people knew, loved and respected her a great deal and urged me to go forward with something for my own campaign on that date. Because they knew her well, they know she would have wanted me to do so. They also know that she'd be thrilled to see her granddaughter running for office - and that she'd want to me to run a strong campaign and win.

I hope that eases your feelings of sadness somewhat, and I hope you'll stop by the Hat and meet some of the people who will be there to celebrate Alice - and if they choose to, support my campaign.

LISA - do it honey. Ray Ambrose is a bully and does this bullying when opposed. He has a chrony who helps him bully people and this guy sits on plan and zone. He is his campaign manager.

Do what you want and don't let any pea brain stand in your way. I hope you win sister. We need smart ladies (who are hot) on council. Women need to rule for a change in this town.

Thanks to everyone for their words of support and encouragement. It's actually even a boost to take the occasional knock (within reason). It lets me know that people are sitting up and taking notice.

As for the stuff about me being "hot", well . . . thanks. As time creeps forward, I've learned to graciously accept any compliment I receive in that regard. And because I know that that looks are skin deep and stupid goes all the way to the bone, I've always been more of a nerdy bookworm than anything else. Wait and see. This so-called "hot" person is a big ol' geek!

Praise the lord and pass the big stack of reference books,

Lisa L.

PS to 10:19: I hope it's my brain, because that part of my anatomy is actually IMPROVING with age.

Anonymous said...

I think the upset you are missing is Marcia Patch in the 7th ward. I think she will not only make it past he primary, but also beat Barnhill in the general election!

Anonymous said...

Lisa,

I think you sound like a great candidate! How long have you lived in the 4th ward?

Anonymous said...

I'm voting for brains and boobs. I just am tired on the dicks on council - that's all. We have plenty of asses and dicks running for council.

To 4:53PM:

I returned to Davenport a few years ago. I lived in the 6th ward at first (for about a year) - and my fiance lived near 5 points in the 4th. When we decided to eliminate the ridiculous expense of two mortgages, we bought a house on Fillmore Lane.

I spent the first 20 years of my life in the 1st Ward. I went to St. Al's, Smart and West. I lived in Chicago, then Cleveland, then Chicago again and then NYC before moving back to D-port.

Glad to have you home again. My wife and I will vote for you on Tuesday!

Lisa
Are you friends with the CEO of Davenport One.

Lisa said...

No, I'm not friends with the CEO of Davenport One.

I think I know what you're hinting at, though. After I moved, I was informed that Tara Barney had once been my neighbor. Ron Bellomy of Riverbend Antiques told me in passing that Ms. Barney and I used to live across the street from one another.

Go figure. As far as I can tell, neither of us knew that until recently. And I met her for the first time ever last week at Mojo's before the mayoral forum. The sum total of our conversation was "Small world, huh?"

As for my take on Davenport One, I refer you to my reply to the Q & A on the Times' website. In a nutshell, they are the chamber of commerce and they're not going anywhere, but I'll be damned if they or any one group (or person) will ever succeed in telling me how to vote on anything.

Economic growth is fantastic and much needed -- but it can't all happen downtown and in the northeast corridor. And we need to take care of our homegrown/mom-n-pop businesses, too.

Here's my mantra going forward (get used to it): "That's great, but what's in it for west Davenport?"

Hope this answers your question, Anon.
