Mayoral Forum Open Thread

I finally got around to listening to the audio recordings of both of the Mayoral Forums. Both the D1 event and the QCTimes event at Mojo's are available on the QCTimes website.

I was pretty much impressed with all 3, and I'm less worried about the possibility of someone other than Gluba winning than I was. I mean, depending on how the council ends up, the Mayor could theoretically never vote on anything anyway. They all talk about grand plans, but we have to keep in mind that its the Aldermen that really do the deciding. One of the questions that I wish had been asked at one of the events was about the use of vetoes. That's the one way besides breaking ties that the Mayor can really affect the council business. I'd be curious about each of the candidates willingness to veto decisions made by the majority of the council. Aside from that, none of them seemed like they would be an embarrassment to the city.

A few other thoughts:
-I actually thought all 3 did better at the Mojos debate than the D1 one
-My preference towards Gluba hasn't changed, but I was disappointed that he came after Howard and Yerington about the Republican and Landlord things, respectively. I don't disagree with his attacks on these issues, but I think he would have been better off staying above that stuff.
-But since he brought it up, what IS with Howard advertising her party? Is it, as someone said, just the Victory Enterprises playbook for GOP candidates?
-Landlords support Yerington? Enough said.
-I did like Yerington's diplomatic answer on Craig Malin
-Since the Mayor is sometimes more of a ceremonial position, I also like Gluba's enthusiasm for Davenport. I definitely consider it part of the job description to be a cheerleader for our city, and he seems up to this task. Too many people in Davenport seem to think we're living in this craphole of a city, and I for one see a lot more good than bad when I look at Davenport.

Gluba's attack on yerington about the fire department donating 500.00 was a low blow. His attitude on things at Mojo was lets wait and see. He offered very little solution to things.
Howard is 100% for using tax money for the Dav promise which isn't good.
I went there today voting Gluba but left voting yerington

QCI
Why not email yerington @ phil4mayor08@aol.com and have a sit down for coffee. I did last week and I was really impressed with what he had to say.

It wasn't the Fire Department that gave the donation to Phil-it was the rental property association. BTW-did you catch the part where Phil said that the Fire Department had no business doing rental inspections? Micro-managing all the way.

Anonymous said...

I am a renter and NO the fire depart does not have the time. They are here to save lives and fight fires. The city needs to hire inspectors to inspect.

Gluba made an a@@ of himself attacking the other 2 today. And we all know Jaimie makes an a@@ out of herself everyday

Anonymous said...

I thought the whole fire department doing inspection issue was interesting. I remember who of the alderman voted for the change. If you have forgotten, I will remind you hoping it will give a little more insight for your election choice.

Yes vote: Hamerlinck, Gruenhagen, Barnhill, Vesole, Lynn, Van Vossen, LaHood, Meyer, Lubel, Ambrose, Steen

No vote: Frink, Howard, Dumas, Brook

Anonymous said...

Funny! But of course that is why it is sarcasm. It has been pretty well proven that Steen, LaHood, Lubell and
Gruenhagen don't really have much of a voice in these things, much less a vote. And, everybody is forgetting one thing...It is really the same frickin program it always was. The same inspectors are really doing the inspections, only instead of Lloyd and that guy Loos (who appeared to be on the take) running the show, it is now honest chief Frese and Glenn Hobart (a former NEO guy). So, no firemen are being called away from their duties. But, things ARE running more efficiently.

Anonymous said...

Another thing...

Yerrington is supposed to be in the landlords pockets since he took $500.00 from them, yet he supports disbanding the fire department and reconstructing the old NEO. The landlords are against that. Gluba is an idiot!

Anonymous said...

In reviewing the recorded campaign disclosure report I noticed that Gluba paid 2000 during sept to a campaign manager(also named Gluba) that resides in the same property as he. Can you do that?

Yerington did NOT accept a donation of 500.00 from the renters acc.

It was the fire dept and they donated because they felt Phil has done a good job in hte past and can do it again

Anonymous said...

shelley.

Yes it was the FIRE DEPARTMENT
Believe me I know

While Yerington was Mayor, he wrote letters speaking of his friendship and respect for Lubell, and took money from the landlords. As for Howard, she has been a real negative on the council. She often has shown a total lack of respect for people addressing the council. Rather you agree with the people or not it is pretty low class to smirk and side talk with other aldermen while someone is speaking.

There's a lot of reading up one can do on QC Times, The Reader, or blogs like this about the details of specific those-in-the-know topics, but i haven't had any luck finding those good ol' types of broad, independent charts that list where candidates stand on more "standard" election-time issues. i may be normally interested in national-stage politics, but i'm cluelessly naive when it comes to local stuff (i just moved to davenport 5 months ago). hell, i don't even know the candidates' political party lines. QC Times was touting something like this several weeks back, but if i recall correctly, the link was broken or some other problem was going on.

does anyone know where to point someline like me? thanks.

In response to 10:20. The Fire Department, as a city department, can not contribute to a political campaign. In addition I can tell you that the Davenport Fire Fighters PAC has not made any contributions to this years election to date. If a member of the Fire Department has made this contribution, it would be a private and personal contribution, and as such not represent the organization.

Then why is Gluba telling everyone Yerington got this from the fire dept

Anonymous said...

That I can not answer. Bad information maybe? Or as I said, maybe an FD employee chose to make a contribution; certainly their right. All I can do is account for the funds of my organization.

Anonymous said...

As Mr. Gluba stating we excepted a donation from the Fire Department, We are not sure where he got his info but this is not true. We did not receive any funds from the DFD

Thank You

Hi, This is Dan Lubell. I want to go on record as stating that I did indeed donate money to Bill Gluba during his senatorial campaign. Granted, it was not much, I believe it was around $50.00. Mr. Gluba was very happy to take the money a the time, and he told me that he supported landlord's rights.

Anonymous said...

Dan - thank for clarifying. I am a local landlord, but not affiliated with a group of any kind. Can you tell me how I can get connected and can you tell me if your group has donated through a PAC to any candidates. I would like to donate to this PAC - what is it called.

Thanks Dan.

QuadCityImages said...

I never heard Gluba say that Yerington took money from firefighters. I heard him say that Yerington took money from landlords. If that isn't true, why didn't Phil say so?

Anonymous said...

Our PAC is taxpayers united. We encompass both landlord's rights as well as general interests of taxpayers. Yes, we did donate $500.00 to Mr. Yerington's campaign, although he has promissed us nothing and even staked out a position on inspections which is contrary to our own. All in all though, we feel he would be a good candidate.
You can reach me at 563 570 7239 to donate money.

Thank you,

Dan Lubell

Dan

That was very nice of you to help out Mr Yerington. He sure is the best candidate out there.

We wish him luck

Anonymous said...

I see Howard and Gluba have turned in the financial report would you know where Yarringtons is?

Anonymous said...

Dan - Has your PAC contributed to any other adlerman candidates? I want to donate and will be sure to call, but I want to be certain that your group is supporting the right candidates. Any others?

I like Yerrington, but not some of the others. How does the PAC decide who gets money? I am cosidering just donating my money individually to some of them, but maybe it is better to go through a PAC.

As a landlord I am concerned about the number of low income housin projects effecting my business. I see them as taking away money and tenants from me. Which candidates have a history of fighting against low income large projects. I think Hamerlink has, but who else would help me? I live in the 8th ward - what about Schabillion?

Anonymous said...

Schabillion work in real estate

Anonymous said...

Folks! Wake up!!! A lot of what you read is Lubell answering himself as a "anonymous" blogger. This guy is a snake and is playing you. Stop the crap. If you have a question, I advise you to ask the candidates personally!

Anonymous said...

Dan - you are the best, what would Davenport do without you? Best wishes on getting the QCRPA friendly candidates elected.

Anonymous said...

Yerington, once an idiot, always an idiot. Come on people! Think! What an embarrassment he has been. "I think i will wear my Hawaiian shirt and goofy permed hair to address the national media." If you want us to look like a bunch of hillbillies who run out side and point up to the sky and say "Look airplane!" Then I guess Phil is our guy. I for one am voting for Donald Duck.

Anonymous said...

Are you jelous? Phil is a very attrative man no matter what he wears and also it shouldn't matter what he wears it is his brain Davenport needs

Anonymous said...

I'm jealous that I can't spell as good as you.

Anonymous said...

Those of you who really, really know Phil have found it a bit appalling that he went from 180 lbs to 300 lbs in just a few years. Steroids will do that to you.

QuadCityImages said...

Let's knock this junk off folks. The people who hurl stupid insults and the people who speak about their candidate as though he should be elected President are both just full of crap.

Anonymous said...

Phil is not on steriods. Dang it Howard you will do anything to make yourself look better won't you?

Anonymous said...

Knock this crap off!!!!!!! Lets get serious here folks.

Yerington and Howard are just good old Iowa corn fed porkers.

I would love to have both of them on the Iowa offensive line.

As far as our mayor, I think not.

Anonymous said...

QCI, Practice what you preach!

Anonymous said...

yerington has a history of protecting slum lords and punks. his last 2 terms were riddled with favors for some of the most unsavory sorts of all kinds.

I expect more of the same from him.

At least Gluba will bring a fresh perspective to the City.

But, it is the aldermen that must be carefully scrutinized, I think all this Mayor debate and forum discussion is just a way to distract us from the real issue of selecting a compentent councl.

Anonymous said...

The real issue is Gluba paying HIS OWN SON 500.00 PER WEEK that is 2,000 a month from CAMPAIGN MONEY I am pissed I donated money but it was NOT to KEEP in the family it was to help his running.

Anonymous said...

Don't worry about Gluba paying his kid for for the long hours he spend. Consider to money I donated to cover his wages and what little you, may or may not have donated, being used to elect the next mayor of Davenport. Viva Gluba..the only choice for Davenport!

Anonymous said...

Gluba paying his kid was wrong. You don't see Howard paying off her son

Anonymous said...

you seriously want to start that argument?

As posted on another blog:

Violet & Jaw66...my name is Kevin Gluba, and I am Bill Gluba's son and Campaign Manager. I am working for my dad, full-time, 50-70 hours per week. I hold a Bachelors Degree in Political Science from the University of Iowa, and an MBA from St. Ambrose University. As background goes, I am a former commodity trader with a small investment firm in Chicago, and prior to that, I have worked on other political campaigns, either payed or volunteer. I am currently looking for a new position in CHicago, but in the meantime, I am working to help elect my father Mayor. Like in any campaign, I wear a lot of hats, assist in putting up yard signs, developing campaign literature, help volunteers, build and oversee the website, etc. My pay is between $7 & $10 an hour, much less than I was making in CHicago. As we aren't taking PAC Money or donations over $500, we can't afford to hire out this work. If you take offense to this, I am sorry. If you want to talk about it, email me at Kgluba@aol.com

Anonymous said...

I am not violet or jaws but I am sorry I feel I must ask. You were paid 500.00 each week. This would mean since you get paid by the hour you are working the EXACT amount of hours a week? Since you say you are working for your dad I assume you are paying taxes on your income. Go RUBULICAN Jamie

Anonymous said...

You are worried about Gluba hiring his son to manage his campaign when Howard has hired Victory Enterprises, which is one of the most sleezy political outfits around. Victory Enterprises is the same consulants that the landlords use. Shame on the Howard backers for using this tactic.

Anonymous said...

How would anyone know who donated to Phil's campaign, he hasn't even filed with the State Ethics Committee. Why?

Anonymous said...

How can yerington get away with not filing like everyone else?

Anonymous said...

RON VAN FOSSEN FOR MAYOR-

Attention Davenport voters, Tomorrow when you go to the polls vote Ron Van Fossen as your write in candidate for mayor. Mr. Van Fossen is what this city needs. "Leadership, not salesmanship is our need today, and the only valid test of leadership is the ability to lead and lead vigorously" --JFK

Anonymous said...

Phil has filed. The committee has tons and just slow getting them uploaded

Anonymous said...

If you don't vote for Jamie, she'll sic her son on you. That's how he'll get paid for helping with the campaign.

Gluba is the only sane choice here. The auto-dialers from Steen and Co. tell us that.

Anonymous said...

the truth is Phil may have filed, the ethics commission posts them, and they post them for the entire state. If they were faxed(completely allowable) they would need to be scanned to be available. I would not presume that they were not filed without substantial proof that you had called the state ethics and campaign disclosure and asked if they are on file. Phil is smarter than that, come on, they are filed and on record, trust me I files the reports myself for another candidate and they are not yet updated even though I confirmed that they received them.

QuadCityImages said...

Its really too bad though, as the whole point of these filings is to allow the public to know who is paying for campaigns before voting.

QuadCityImages said...

Also though, the landlords are up to their usual purely negative campaigning, which doesn't have to be included as an in-kind donation. Telling you not to vote for Jamie or Bill isn't NECESSARILY telling you to vote for Phil, I suppose.

However, I think those of us in the blog world know the score on who the landlords support by now.

I think Gluba will be the next Winborn. I want a leader, not a woosy.
