Overtime Open Thread

I'm going to be pretty busy today and tomorrow, so talk amongst yourselves. I've only got a couple quick things.

Last night the cops spotted a stolen car, followed it while additional units converged, and then stopped it around 14th and Harrison or Main. One of the 2 people inside bailed out and was caught after a foot chase, while the other was captured still in the car. Another good job by the officers. Things like this happen practically on a nightly basis, but never make the news. Whenever there's a news story about a crime, there's never a follow up story if and when the police solve it, arrest the person, etc, unless its a big story like the Blackhawk fire or a murder. The DPD is out there doing good old police work every night, for very little thanks.

Also, I've heard that the first of the new black and white squad cars have arrived, although I haven't seen one for myself yet. Has anyone else spotted one of these "more professional-looking" police cars yet? Feel free to submit a picture.

They had a very shiny one outside of City Hall prior to Wednesday's council meeting.

Quite sharp.

It takes up to seven weeks to recycle to radios, computers, cameras, and lights from the old black cars. So more will be showing up shortly. Steve is working his tail off.

The cars are interesting looking, just need to get used to them. The reason they went to the Black/White is to give a better neighborhood presents. You can see them from quite aways.

It wasn't that long ago they went from all-white to all-black to be more stealthy.

I think (for what it's worth) that it was Bladels understanding that perceptions needed to be changed in Davenport.

A very visable, active force. From cameras to cops, busting the perv's at Credit Island to being quick to find the murders.

He also was the first chief in some time, to use the city television to highlight promotions, retirements and such.

You're right QCI, the Police Department and Fire Department hardly ever make the news with even rarer follow ups. Maybe if the news was thinking they'd come up with Public servant of the week like they used to do with the Good neighbor segments in the paper.

It appeared that at the CIP meeting that Howard and Barney had no knowledge about the money that was earmarked for the widening/extension of Eastern Avenue transfered to the 67th Street project. Is that because they were not paying attention to memo's, or did staff or Malin do that change without council approval?

I wonder if that will qualify Niky Bowles to a refund on her assessment that she paid for Eastern several years ago.

The new library at Malin Heights is proposed to have the same amount of square feet as the Fairmount Branch. It appears to be a waste of taxpayer funds to hire someone to make design changes to a building plan that Davenporter's overall seem to be in favor of. We are for capital improvements like this, but done in a financially responsible way.

From what I have heard, the library will be very similar. Basically, they're mostly doing what you suggest, I think.

Capital Improvements are great, as long as we are paying for something that alot of people get benefit out of. Too many of the projects cost a bundle, and just set with hardly any use. Now the Figgee is begging for schools to bring bus loads of students in, just to keep their numbers up. For aldermen to get a clear picture of what is happening there, the museum should be required to break reports into 'paid' and 'free' admissions.

I am just dreading the announcement of the main library closing. it woul dbe expected. We devalue the central city,

It would be better if the main branch library was moved up near Central, and had a place with convenient parking, and away from the hobo's that hang both inside and out.

It would be better if JLCS would stop attracting the hobos to the central city, Maybe we can relocate the shelter by the new Pedcor project.

I have never been bothered by a homeless person inside or outside the main library.

Of course not QCI.

It depends what you mean by 'bothered' QCI. For some of us, we are 'bothered' when we have to walk past them sitting outside, and having to smell someone who hasn't had a bath in a year, and some of us are 'bothered' when we have to think twice about using a chair after some bum with grungy clothes has sat in it previously. You have to wonder what they carry on them like ticks and lice.

Alderman Meyers, sometime when you are over in Rock Island after dark, check out a good idea that they came up with. They put up some new security lights along a stretch of 7th Avenue, starting at 11th Street, and going up to the downtown area. Not only do they look great and really fit the old neighborhood, but they really illuminate the houses and the street. It would be interesting to know if crime went to zero in that area. Maybe this is something that Davenport could use in troubled areas downtown.

Also Alderman Meyer, if the second budget meeting happens tommorrow, could you again direct staff to put it on the city channel, and somehow announce to the public what times it will be shown please. Thank You.

I got a word that another rental was busted for being a drug house in the central city. Why do we have so many rentals allowed to be drug houses in this city? Where are the landlords?
