I'm way too busy to post much of anything this week, but I did want to at least put up a general discussion thread. I did manage to make it to the fair tonight, and that was good food as always.
This morning I was driving past the old St. Joe's on Marquette, and I saw that there was a garage sale going on inside. I stopped and went inside, and didn't end up buying anything, but it was neat to look around the old church. On our way out, I talked to one of the members for 10 or 15 minutes, and I was quite impressed with what they've been able to accomplish with only about 30 members. New bathrooms have been built, and geothermal climate control was added. This is the church that former Alderman Meyer tried to prevent from removing the pews from, but despite the lack of historic seats, it is still a beautiful building, and using folding chairs instead of permanent pews allows them to hold other events in the church. Its worth stopping down, if not just to see the inside of the church. The sale runs from 8am to noon tomorrow.
Edit: I wrote this just after midnight on Friday night, so my references to "this morning" and "tomorrow" may have been confusing. The garage sale is from 8am-noon on Saturday.

Thank God that those fine people are there to save that poor neighborhood and the mixed up people who own properties in that area. What would the central city do without missionaries going into the neighborhoods to save them. God bless them. I wonder if they live in that neighborhood? I doubt it - who would after all.
This church already has its second pastor. Guess first one's (Nestle) plans to open one in the "less beautiful section of town didn't pann out.
You need to get over your former Alderman Meyer fixation. Move on with your life. It's getting a little old to continually bash him. Try someone new for a change, like maybe Alderman Moris Barnhill or Alderman Bloom.
I mentioned him once in the post. Get over your dreams that he was the greatest Alderman. He may have been good at reporting graffiti and shoveling sidewalks, but there's more to being an Alderman than service requests.
3:50 - There are many that live in that neighborhood that are working hard to make things better... and I'm sure that they appreciate the help from Legacy Church, whether their members live there or not. IMHO, If the German heritage backlash hadn't happened during WWII, that area would have continued to thrive and would have probably put the East Village to shame.

Those people and churches are doing a great job in keeping that area poor. I just don't see the improvements. Sorry. It is a porr transient crime ridden area with soup kitchens and food pantries and shelters. And slum rentals. Oh - and a pawn shop. That isn't improvement. Would you want to live there?
Oh - and Meyer is missed believe me. Boom fails to see the crap in his ward apparently. What exactly has he done to improve it. Still dirty, still unsafe, still filled with bad rentals and crappy properties. It is sickening.
