Wide Open Open Thread

Its actually been a few days since an open thread, so here's a place for whatever.

In Blogger news, due to the constant badgering whenever I log in, I'm considering switching to the new version. I'm worried about my 470+ posts being all screwed up after the switch though, so I'm very hesitant. Anyone had a good experience moving a year and a half old blog to the new system?

Added at 6:30: Pioneer98, formerly of the Bridge to Somewhere blog has started a new blog, called InfoSwim. Here's the link. He's got a good article about the Freight House and his own version of the QCT's "Why not here?"

Also, I gave the state reps and such the boot off of my link bar.

I didn't transfer that much, but the transition to the Google set-up was smooth as silk. The only real snag I've found is commenting on someone else's blog. If another blog isn't Google you have to sign into Google before you type your comment. It let's you sign in after the fact, but you lose what you typed. Still the price is right and I think the new set up is easier to use.

I was one of the guinea pigs for google's beta test, and I got crushed. Although I gave up and built from scratch, I never lost any posts on the transition.

Things have gotten much better, but you'll see that my headlines on QC Online don't work, only the blog title works. I think that's a holdover of the beta, since many others have switched and not had a problem.

I'd definitely recommend that you save your html template on your local hard drive before you switch.

If you get into trouble, don't expect the google folks to provide much help. I must have sent 20 requests for assistance and got ZERO replies.

Ian Frink will be Mayor Pro-tem for this year - good experience for him.

At the public input session for the new rental inspection program, the vocal and voting critics of the old system were nowhere to be found. Evidently Billy (the nutty professor)Lynn and Shawn (the Bill Lynn spawn) Hammerlink were too busy with Ronnie (I'll drink to that) VanFossen to bother with listening to public input. I guess they'll get the edited and slanted version from their CRPA plants that were there. Anyway, nice to see they care now that their dirty work is done.

If you're concerned about losing everything, I'd advise that you temporarily change the blog settings to publish all 400+ posts on one page, then back it up to your hard drive (then change it back, of course). That way you'd at least have a backup.

I was impressed by the number of kids using the skatepark yesterday afternoon, despite the chilly weather.

That thing is definitely a hit. I bet that dollar-per-user it ends up being cheaper than any playground or baseball diamond in the city.

I was concerned about the number of kids using the skatepark during the day when I drove by around 11:45 am. There was school yesterday - right?!?

Wasn't it when you first started being a guest blogger on Fly's blog, that you said that people probably wouldn't like your far left of the mainstream ideas and lifestyle? At that time, Fly incouraged you to blog, as that is what makes for interesting and entertaining reading. Nothing has changed. If you want a blog where you write a column, and EVERY person agrees with you, it would be boring as hell and nobody would bother looking. So personally, I think it's a good thing that you are on the Far Left of every issue, and then to hear the thinking of the majority of Davenporters in the comments. If you are changing to get rid of Winding Hills - good luck - he does add just another level of 'shared ideas' in the blogging world. This is no different than the QCTimes. They take sides on things sometimes just to sell papers.

No, no, you misunderstood me, although I see now that the way I said it that's how it would sound.

The constant badgering I was referring to was FROM blogspot, because when you log into the page for bloggers it constantly tries to get you to update to the new version. WindingHills is WindingHills, and I'd never censor or get rid of him. I've still yet to delete or edit a single comment, and I'm proud of that.

I don't think I'm to the left of most people on everything... I kind of thing the blog commenters are more opposed to things than the general public. For example, from reading blogs you would have thought Niky was going to be swept in as mayor, and she didn't even make it past the primary.

To the poster concerned about the kids using the skatepark.....My kids got out early yesterday because of finals. That may be the reason so many urchins were out and about.

I am not trying to criticize anyone, just asking. Thanks for answering. There about maybe 10 kids there. Anyway - we have a problem with youth crime in Davenport and not all parents are good ones unfortunately. While the park can be a good thin for kids, it can also be a place to find truants. Hopefully we will sweep by this place every now and then.

Yeah, I was thinking about saying that earlier. It's easier to catch 'em if they're all in one place.

In a city of the size of Davenport, you would think that the council would have rules governing themselves as far as a dress code goes for the nights they appear on TV for City Council. Charlie Brooke looked somewhat tattered at the last meeting. Instead of a nice sports coat or suit jacket, he was dressed in a sweatshirt. That is just a little too casual for doing the public business.

QuadCityImages said...

Yeah...........

Brooke's the one with a fashion problem.

Right.

Well then, Meyers could at least COMB HIS HAIR!!

Keith looked fashionable in a new sports coat. Keith is getting to be the council trendsetter.

I don't like Brooke as an alderman and as a person I can't say I really know him too well. I seem to be a sucker for humans. We should cut him some fashion slack, I understnd his health is bad.

Anonymous said...

I agree about cutting Brooke some slack about his fashion sense. Didn't like him as mayor, don't like him as an alderman, but I know from having a similar illness in my family, that what you're wearing when you feel like total crap, is the last thing on your mind. Well wishes, Charlie.

Anonymous said...

If charlie is that ill, then it's time for him to step aside and not finish out his term. No bid deal. Then all we need to do is appoint Niky for the remainder. Everyone would be happy.

Anonymous said...

Step aside because you don't like his fashion sense?! People who are ill and in pain do their jobs every single day. I'm not a fan of Charlie, but that was a heartless, ignorant comment. Like so many who post here.

Anonymous said...

If you want to talk about heartless, ignorant comments, charlie was the master of them the whole time he was mayor. He didn't care who's feelings he hurt or stepped on.

Anonymous said...

Niky....NEVER!!!!!!!

QuadCityImages said...

This debate is so 2005.

Anonymous said...

This isn't a 2005 debate QCI, the November 2007 debate is just beginning. Niky for Mayor !

Anonymous said...

Niky, not a snowballs chance in you know where.

Nighbors unite to support the fire department! The days of the old NEO are over, and they are gonna clean up this town!

QuadCityImages said...

When are they planning to start doing that?

Anonymous said...

To 4:03, You are a moron, the same people that were running the NEO are with the fire department, but just four of them. Now who is going to send scumlords like you nuisance letters. Think about it. Now the city will have to hire more people to pick up the slack, and these people will be even more agressive and less experianced than the old inspectors.
