Almost Christmas Open Thread

I don't have much to write about this morning.

I unfortunately will be making a trek out into shopping madness today for a last few gifts. I don't see how the traffic on Elmore could get much worse than yesterday, but I'm sure there's a way. Seems like Best Buy and Target should be billed for the cost of the cop directing traffic at the Best Buy driveway as punishment for not connecting their lots. This would allow BB folks to use the stoplight at the Target driveway. That would be too logical I guess. At least the west side of Elmore is laid out in a somewhat logical fashion. You can drive from store to store without having to venture back out onto Elmore.

As usual I'll be taking a flight to Phoenix on the 31st, so I'll be out of the loop (more than usual) for a week or so. My hotel has wireless internet, so I'll still be able to toss up a post once in a while. I've seen most of the touristy stuff down there at this point; any suggestions for Phoenix area attractions to check out? I'll also be in Vegas for a couple days, but I'm sure I won't be bored there.

Also, thanks to Alderman Meyer for the Christmas garbage amnesty. Wrapping paper is technically recyclable, but plenty of gift packaging isn't. Having to buy a $4 sticker or being forced to use one of your 2 emergency free stickers isn't a great holiday gift. Lets hope the workers wear the back braces and don't use this as an opportunity to all file for workers comp.

  2. I read in the Leader where Mayor Winborn said he'd like a Davenport without one-ways. With larger cities going back to two-way streets and seeing an increase in business and development it would seem to make sense. Could this be a real boost to the downtown area? What I've read so far would indicate it would.

  3. If you haven't already:
    1. Check out the Frank Lloyd Wright desert campus in Scottsdale.
    2. Check out The Stockyards Restaurant, and get a rattlesnake appetizer.
    3. Or you could check out one of the dozen new "lifestyle centers" going up in suburbia outside Pheonix.

  4. 9:11 -I believe it was his motion to have the weeks after Christmas be free for putting out extra garbage bags. I just caught the end of the discussion on Channel 18, but I'm pretty sure it was his thing.

Cruiser -Its definitely the new trend, but I still can't see it being worth the trouble here. Making Harrison and Brady 2 ways, for example, would just mean that half the northbound traffic that is currently forced to drive by a business on Brady would now not even see it. According to folks who know about this stuff, one ways are only justified by extremely large traffic counts. There was talk about finding out if the volume was large enough to require one ways, but I haven't heard anything since. Changing 3rd/4th or 14th/15th back to 2-ways makes more sense to me.

Pioneer98 - Haven't done 1 or 2, but I have seen some of the Lifestyle Centers. (Probably as a result of being down there with my girlfriend) There is a restaurant on a small hill/mountain called Rustlers Roost that I've been to that serves snake though. Maybe I'll get to check out the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation this trip.

  5. QCI - I like the views from Cammelback Mountain and believe it or not, the top level of the parking ramps at the airport.

I also like seeing the lack of signage in Scottsdale; a tough sign ordinance.

  6. You can avoid the headaches of traffic on Elmore by giving Save-A-Lot gift certificates.

  7. QCI, if you are looking for just the 'right' gift for Alderman Meyer, you should get him a City of Davenport Flag. Better hurry - quanities are limited and they are going fast. :)

  8. I personally don't get the "garbage amnesty" deal that Meyer (and Hamerlink) came up with. That is exactly what the two "free" stickers were meant to cover. Here they go, micro managing again. The staff had come up with a solution for this time of year, but they had to but in. What about the non-christens? Do they get amnesty on there “holiday”? The free stickers was the fairest why to take care of this problem.

  9. Oh - relax - it's the holdiay season you Scrooge.

  10. It doesn't really hurt to give citizens a break once in a while. $4 per bag is horrible, and there are more reasons than just the holidays that you could have a bunch of extra garbage once in a while.

Folks get free yardwaste weeks, why not a free garbage week? At least until the budget starts looking bad again...

  11. Alderman Meyer ... be sure and ask for a report on how many, if any, of the garbage men and personal borrowed from other Public Works departments got injured during the two week free garbage bags pick up. It would be interesting to see if any city employees took advantage of this and created an injury so they could get some off time.

  12. I don't think Alderman Meyer would have been as concerned about giving the free weeks if the city (city staff) had it's act together to deal with residents who don't know how to throw their garbage away. The 2 week reprieve is a gift to the entire city, which otherwise would look like a my living room floor after all the gifts have been torn open.

  13. We really don't get ''free'' yard waste weeks. Dee has that fee for pickup under the ''stormwater utility'' umbrella. Nothing is free in this city; most things we are taxed for three times.

  14. ....if the city (city staff) had it's act together to deal with residents who don't know how to throw their garbage away...

Wait a minute, how is it the city's fault that some people are so dumb that they can't figure out how to throw away their trash. For goodness sakes, it's not rocket science. Do you what the city to come into people's home and dress them in the morning too?

  15. 7:58 dont' be ridiculous. Dress your self. As for property owners who don't know how to load the garbage can there are city ordinances, if enforced, are meant to encourage better behavior. That's why we have laws -- to encourage better behavior and deter bad behavior. Staff, supported by the council and the public, fail to use them. It is us that need help getting dressed in the morning.

  16. Maybe Sesame Street can produce a few episodes on how to keep alleys cleaned up

  17. The point is (at 7:58 AM) why can't we expect people to be responsible for themselves?

    ReplyDelete
  18. We can expect it but as you can see by looking around our community there will always be those who aren't responsible. Accept that fact, respond with appropriate civic action, and life around here will surely improve.

  24. Remember how you felt when your dream girl shot you down? Well now you never have to feel that way again! Pheromones have been proven to work, and are guaranted to increase your attractiveness to women of all ages. Just look at some of the testimonials we have received back from 100% satisfied repeat customers! :

"I've always had a problem approaching girls. They would just walk past me like I didn't exist. I sometimes felt like they purposely would not give me any attention just because they were snobby and stuck up. Now, when I use Ultra Allure Pheromones, it's alot easier to approach girls because THEY are usually the ones that will smile at me first or make eye contact."
    Robert K, Boise Idaho

"I saw you guys offered a moneyback guarantee, so I though I would give it a go(I had nothing to lose). Well how glad am I that I did! My first night out with a little Ultra Allure on me I had 4 different girls ask me what I was wearing and what I was doing later(I met up with the hottest of the 4 ;) ) Now I don't even leave the house without throwing on a few dabs of Ultra Allure- its my (not so) secret weapon! I can honestly say this product truly works, women are really drawn to you once they catch a little bit of the scent."
    Brad M. Kentucky
